GIRLS BASKETBALL CLUB TRYOUTS!!! Tryouts for the Kettle Moraine Girls Basketball Club are scheduled for August 23rd through August 26th. KMMS STUDENTS BECOME PUBLISHED!!! Pictured here is 6th-grade artist Ava M., whose published artwork, Metamorphosis, beautifully captures the journey of growth and change. Making tough decisions is a major part of growth and the transformation toward independence for middle school students, and Ava recently faced a classic dilemma when conflicting schedules arose. She had to choose between attending the regional awards ceremony or an end-of-the-year field trip with her sixth-grade peers. Ultimately, she chose her friends over the public recognition, highlighting a poignant phase of the importance of friendships in middle school. This special volume, showcasing Ava’s work alongside fellow talented Kettle Moraine published contributors: Jasper P., Jo L., Autumn P., Brooks B., Halle W., Makenzie D., Maya H., Norah F., and Sawyer T. MEGA MATH MEET!!! While most students were winding down for the summer, a select group of Kettle Moraine middle schoolers were gearing up to face some of the most daunting academic challenges in the state. This year’s Mega Math Meet threw a major curveball at our team. Because the competition fell on the exact same day as our 8th-grade graduation, our veteran 8th-graders couldn't attend. Rather than throwing in the towel, eight courageous 7th graders answered the call, stepping up to take their places against older, more experienced teams. Walking into a room dominated by 8th graders is intimidating enough on its own. But the Master of Ceremonies didn't mince words, kicking off the morning by telling the crowd: “We intentionally made these problems challenging, and we do not expect you to get many correct today.” Instead of letting the high-pressure introduction get the best of them, our 7th graders dug in. Individually, each student powered through 4 individual tests. Then, they came together as a group of 8, facing a ticking clock with just 20 minutes to collaborate and solve 6 grueling Team Challenge problems. They showed incredible grit, collaborated beautifully, and attacked every single round with an admirable "we've got this" attitude. We are incredibly proud of these students for demonstrating that true academic talent isn't just about getting the right answer; it’s about having the courage to face unkown challenges and figuring out what to do when you don't know what to do.

CALLING ALL STEM ENTHUSIASTS - JOIN A ROBOTICS TEAM!!! The Laser Bots / Laser Ducks FTC Robotics Teams are recruiting students who are serious about joining the ranks. This isn’t just a club - it's a commitment to engineering, innovation, problem-solving, and teamwork. We’re looking for focused, curious, and hands-on kids who want to dive into: Engineering & Design - CAD (Computer-Aided Design), Programming, Building & Part Fabrication (3D printing, Laser cutting, CNC Routering), and Robotic Competitions.
WHO WE WANT: If you’re the kind of person who likes to watch YouTube videos on mechanical design, or you enjoy taking things apart and building things - you’re exactly who we’re looking for! We are also looking for business students that can run our fundraising, outreach, and accounting.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Game Season - September through April: 2-3 weekly meetings & 3-4 weekend competitions. Off Season - May through August: 2-3 monthly meetings to continue learning.

KMMS STUDENT BUILDS GAME FOR DOUSMAN ELEMENTARY!!! Jules H. (8th grade) did a STEM independent study with Mr. Gutbrod and made a really cool project. She made this Octo-Monster to be used in Mr. Burac's Dousman Elementary Phy Ed Class. The game involves up to eight players each controlling a tentacle to move the monster around like a puppet. WISCONSIN FIRST NATIONS PRESENTATION!!! Mrs. Ottenad, Library Instructional Technology Specialist, recently shared a presentation with each elementary school’s fourth-grade classes about the culture of her people, the Bad River Band of the Chippewa Indians. Her presentation brought the curriculum on Wisconsin Tribal Nations to life, sharing information about the land along the shores of Lake Superior, as well as the culture, traditions, ceremonies, and values of Native Americans. Â

REGISTER FOR SUMMER ACADEMY NOW!!! Course registration opens at 8am on Monday March 16th. Students will be able to choose four courses per day (with the exception of Moving on to Kindergarten). To accommodate more families and staffing demands we will again run two separate sessions lasting six weeks total. Session one will run June 15-July 24 (no classes 7/3). Students can attend the full six weeks or one session only if preferred. Session two classes will be a repeat of content and activities from session one, unless noted in the course description. KMMS MARKET!!! The KM Middle School Market launched this year, turning a student idea into a hands-on learning opportunity. Inspired by a high school senior, the Market gives middle school students their own version of the Laser Locker within the library Makerspace. With support from intern Jakob O. and student leader Alice H., it has grown into a student-run operation where students design products, manage inventory, and learn the basics of marketing and finance. The project expanded through classroom connections, Makerspace activities, and support from the 3D Print Club. Students assembled the mobile store cart, bringing the concept to life under the slogan “Innovation on the Move.” The Middle School Market now serves as a practical learning space where students build skills in teamwork, organization, and problem-solving while contributing to their school community.

KMMS STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN MSOE CHALLENGE EVENT!!! The Kettle Moraine School District demonstrated its commitment to high-level STEM education today as six middle school teams participated in the NFPA Fluid Power Action Challenge Workshop at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). These students, nominated for their exceptional visual and technical skills, spent the day at the Kern Center learning the fundamentals of pneumatic power by constructing rotating platforms and lifters. This hands-on workshop serves as the foundation for an intensive design period; over the next month, these students will return to their classrooms to engineer, test, and document a unique fluid power machine. The teams will reconvene at MSOE on May 12, 2026, for the official Challenge Day, where they will compete in a timed environment to prove the effectiveness of their designs.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE EXTENDS TO THE STAGE!!! Middle school performers from southeastern Wisconsin participated in Theater Arts Immersion Day at the Oconomowoc Arts Center. This collaborative event between SLALN and the Oconomowoc High School Theater Department brought together students in grades 6–8 for a full day of workshops, performance, and career exploration, offering a behind-the-scenes look at both the artistic and technical sides of theater. Students engaged in breakout sessions led by theater professionals and high school mentors, including monologue preparation with personalized feedback, improv and “cold reading” activities, and hands-on learning in costume design, blocking, and stage traditions like the ghost light. They also explored the business of theater through career insights and unique prop design demonstrations. We are proud of our KM-Create and KM-Inspire 8th-grade participants—Georgie C., Layla K., Sofia K., and Julia V.—for representing our district with creativity and talent. The day concluded with a community lunch in the OAC courtyard, connecting students with peers from across the region, and we look forward to seeing their new skills shine on Kettle Moraine stages.

LASER LADIES OF STEM AT MILWAUKEE TOOL!!! The ladies had an inspiring visit to Milwaukee Tool this week. They were welcomed by a group of talented women who shared their personal journeys and passion for engineering, offering a firsthand look at what it’s like to build a career in STEM. During the visit, students toured and received a sneak peak into the company’s Rapid Prototyping Lab, took part in hands-on, STEM-focused activities and were led on a fascinating tour that highlighted the growth of this amazing company. The hands-on tool use was a great experience for all. They were introduced to the concept of “disruptive innovation”—not just improving existing tools, but transforming how they work altogether. The group also explored how advances in artificial intelligence are shaping the future of tools, allowing them to respond more intuitively to users. The highlight of the trip was a Q&A session with a panel of female engineers. Our students asked thoughtful, insightful questions about career paths and decision-making, demonstrating both maturity and strong critical thinking skills. It was a proud moment to see their curiosity and confidence on display.

HERB KOHL FELLOWSHIP RECIPIENTS!!! The Herb Kohl Fellowship program celebrates and supports outstanding educators and administrators across Wisconsin who demonstrate excellence and innovation. Jamie Cuzman of Kettle Moraine Middle School, and Rachel Weiss of Magee Elementary, have been selected as 2026 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Teacher Fellows. Dr. Justin Nies of Magee Elementary has been named a Principal Fellow. The fellowship’s mission is to empower educators by helping them achieve their goals, whether in their classrooms or through professional growth. Each year, 100 educators and up to 17 public and private school principals are selected, receiving a one-time $6,000 award, with their schools also earning a matching $6,000 grant to enhance learning. As part of this honor, Mrs. Cuzman and Mrs. Weiss will automatically be considered for Wisconsin Teacher of the Year. Congratulations to all of our recipients!
